The Telegraph app

Creating the ultimate news app for The Telegraph

The Telegraph Media Group (TMG) wanted to improve the stability, content delivery and design of the digital editions of their daily and weekend papers. We were asked to work with them and their contractors to build and test the new app for tablet, mobile and Kindle using Drupal. We also provided the internal editorial team with 24/7 support.

TMG's award-winning coverage is now available in one easy to navigate mobile and tablet app. Subscribers enjoy news and opinion across business, politics, world affairs, sport and culture, plus the weekend supplements, Stella magazine, interactive picture galleries and all their favourite puzzles.

The Challenge

Our challenge was to improve the stability, content delivery and design of TMG’s digital editions of their daily and weekend newspapers. TMG wanted a simple content management system to manage the content and workflow and to feed Pugpig, the publishing platform which delivers content to the digital app.

In order to provide ongoing support and 24 hour maintenance an in depth knowledge of The Telegraph's systems, intrastructure and workflow would be required.

The Solution

Cameron & Wilding team used Drupal 7 to develop the content management system and integration with Pugpig. Through extensive knowledge sharing and close collaboration between The Telegraph team and Cameron & Wilding the app was ready in December 2015. Throughout the project, we built a strong team that developed confidence in the product.

Our partnership with Cameron & Wilding allowed us to start the project in the right way, define the best practices we are still using, and was crucial in our ability to deliver the new Digital Edition app on time. Their excellent project management - which is an example of how a third party company should report about the "health" of a project - their developers’ passion for high quality code and the "openness" of their management were key in our successful relationship.

The Key Benefits

The main key benefits of this new system include facilitating the move towards 93 - 95% of print items appearing in the digital edition. The only content now excluded from the mobile edition is content that cannot be made responsive by it's nature such as long lists and single images.

Benefits include:

  • Unlimited website access: expert opinions from every angle with unlimited access to the latest news, views and trends on the website
  • Live news and daily editions on smartphones and tablets
  • Strong team built between C&W, TMG and its contractors who know the system and infrastructure well
